17 Years unpaid child maintenance

Anybody know, or anybody got any idea where I could get info on the following?
A father didn't pay child maintenance for 17 years. The Child is now an adult. Can the child or the Mother sue the father for unpaid child maintenance?
If anyone knows whether you can or not. Do you have any idea of who the best people to contact would be for advice?
Ps. I know this may sound a bit overkill but the father abandoned his wife and 3 kids 20 years ago and hasn't been involved since. He's now come back on the scene because the mortgage that the mother has been paying all this time is almost paid off and he wants to try and steal half! So the son is just looking at options for now.

I hope his names not on the mortgage.0

Didn't they get divorced? If not, and his name is on the deeds, he's may well be entitled to his share of the house.
I would get some legal advice asap.0 -
Was there ever an order of child support in place?0

His name is on the mortgage and the deeds. They are divorced.
There was never an order of child support because at the time there wasn't a CSA in place (or so I've been told).
To tell the truth the mother didn't know much about sorting out the bills and payments and things like that - so never got his name removed from the mortgate or house.
Sorry I know this is a confusing one - appreciate any advice anyone can give.0 -
This is a case where the best advice will come from a solicitor.0

And before you go to a solicitor this site will give you lots to think about.

The more you learn before you go the less you waste your solicitor's time explaining the basics and better use you will get out of your (unbelievably expensive) time with your solicitor ... Do your research now.

Thats brilliant thank you, thats what I was hoping really; to be able to find out as much as I possibly could first. Even if all it does is lets me know what paperwork she needs to take with her!0
