Wharfedale car stereo - Ipod advice needed please

There is a Wharfedale car stereo on offer at Argos at the moment with a USB port, but i need advice to determine whether it would be useful to buy for DD.
Will the ipod battery get charged by being plugged into the USB or does it just allow you to play your ipod without using the battery reserves (If you know what i mean)
Will an ipod play through the car radio, using the USB port, without the need for an FM transmitter?
Any advice gratefully accepted.
