PAYE BR tax code

Options
Hi
Can anyone help me? My partner is a firefighter and when he joined 2004 he only worked part time so waso n a BR tax code as his main job was elsewhere.
IN march 2005 he left his other place of work and in April 2006 he became a full time fire fighter (this being his only full time job). He sent off his P45 to the local payroll office.

Now he has discovered (not very organised) that he is still on Br tax code and has been since April 2006. We have called HMRC and they said they would allocate the changes for this tax year into his tax for this year for the preveious years we need to send a letter.
I draft one for him to say bascially can I formally request that my tax is looked into etc for the year all his other detials but I was wondering if anyone knew how long it would take and the process?

Basically will they need back up P60's or payslips (we have them all bar one) but I jsut wanted to check if I should send these off in the letter or should I jsut send the first letter?

How long will it take to get processed is it a case of calling them to check (sending the letter recorded and with Urgent payment claim on envelope).

Thanks in advance we are getting married this year and this money would really help.

Thanks
V

Send the P60's with the letter (originals - copy them first and copy the letter). Don't send it recorded / registered. It simply costs you more - slows it down at their end - and adds no value (Royal Mail rarely update the tracking for such items to bulk receivers of mail).

You're unlikely to get much back within 2 months - treat it as a bonus if you do. As he's been voluntarily overpaying for close to 5 years it can't be 'urgent'? ;)

The 04-05 year time expires 31st Jan. As there may be a small overpayment that year - worth ensuring the formal claim is in before then .... that meets the deadline.

    You're welcome.

If you can't find that odd P60? Send the final payslip for that year .... not something they will normally accept as evidence. But it's a bit cosmetic if he's been at the same place for 5 years - as they'll mainly work off the P14 end of year figures from his employer.
