Bile stain

Options
Some months ago, my cat was sick on an oatmeal-coloured carpet. At the time, I used some carpet cleaner designed for pet problems. It didn't work, and I have a yellowy stain on the carpet.

I didn't really want to go from shop to shop buying expensive cleaning products in the hopes that eventually one of them will work, so I left it.

Is it too late to get the stain out? If not, can anyone tell me how?

I've a cat with digestive problems who throws up whenever he eats too quickly - before we got this under control I was cleaning piles of cat sick every few days.

I got on very well with Mr T own brand carpet & upholstery spray - it's a plain version of the Vanish type sprays. Not specially for pet stains or anything. Not very OS as it's a chemical thing but it works very well for me.

I unscrew the squirty spray top and carefully tip some of the neat solution onto the stain, just enough to dampen the whole thing and get right down into the carpet pile, as the spray just sits on the top and you have to work harder scrubbing it in. Then use the spray properly, squirt it on and leave it for a little while. My cats are all very interested in what I'm doing at this stage so I sit and guard the sprayed-on area as I'm sure they would try and lick it! After a few minutes, give it a really good scrub-in with an old dishcloth, and then before it dries out do another spray-wait-scrub. You can see the stain colour coming out with the foam, if it gets too dirty looking wipe it away and spray on clean foam, so you're not scrubbing dirty foam into your carpet.

Two scrubs always did it for me but you might need another try with an old stain.

    Good luck :)
  • Thank you, Jenova, I'll take a look in the supermarket for Mr T spray.

Hi Sue, I imagine any of the supermarket own brands of carpet & upholstery spray will be fine as they're quite similar - go for whichever shop is nearest to you!
  • It was a carpet spray I used in the first place. I think it was called 2001 or something similar.

I don't know that one, I've not tried it myself - but maybe you could try using it again if you've still got some left? It could save you wasting your money on a new product.

Try tipping some of the neat solution onto the stain and leaving it for quite a while to soak in. Put a heavy upside down bowl over the wet bit so that your cat can't tread in it or lick it. Then after half an hour or so of soaking in it, come back and give it a scrub.

It might take you three or four tries but if you already have the spray, it's worth trying it again. If you've already used it all or thrown it in the bin, try a supermarket own brand one as they're not too expensive.
