Help...do I need a US visa for a connecting flight from Newark?

I need to go to Canada at very short notice due to a family emergency. The flight i will have to book is from Dublin via Newark to Toronto.....the question is do i need a US visa.???
I am very confused with it all and dont want to be turned away from the aiport....any advise would be greatly appreciated....

Not if you qualify under the visa waver program:

You will need an esta though. (google it - I cant post links)
Fill it in in advance of travel and pay the fee.
You need it even if in transit as most US airports will put you through immigration regardless. Essentially they make you go through the US even if you are going somewhere else.0 -
Yes you need to fill in an ESTA form. I normally use the link on the MSE page to make sure I go to the official one. Costs about £10. I think you need to do it 3 days before you travel.
