emergency tax code, now corrected... tax refund?

Options
Evening everyone, not sure if this is in the right forum but I would really appreciate some help

I started working last year August and handed in my P45 to my employer, but months later I was still on an emergency tax code so I decided to call the tax office myself and it was sorted in my next pay check.

How would I go about getting a refund on the tax I over payed for those months? On the phone the lady told me it would be sorted in my next pay check if I sent her my copy of the P45, which I did, but I didn't get a refund.

Is there a form I need to fill out? Should I wait another month or should I call them up, or will it take a few months for them to reimburse it?

I've asked a few people at work and everyone tells me different things, some people say it should come in my next pay check, some people say fill out a form and some people say wait till the end of the tax year...

Any ideas?

Thanks!

  • My DD paid too much tax when she first started her new job . I telephoned HMRC and they told me that it was up to my DD's employer to make the repayment of over paid tax back to my DD.

DD telephone her payroll dept and told them that she had spoken to HMRC and informed them of what she had been told. The next week in her pay packet DD received her tax rebate of everything she was owed.

It appears that payroll were just a bit slow in doing their job.

I would advise you to speak to someone in your payroll dept and to do it soon as once it comes to the end of the tax year (5th April) your employer is no longer able to issue your rebate and it then becomes the responsibility of HMRC to issue it and they may take a while to do this !
The loopy one has gone :j

Did HMRC send you a notice of coding? If so, what is your code number?

You don't normally overpay tax on emergency code. If it was 647 Month 1 you would have been getting full allowances. But it's not cumulative - so anything due to you because e.g. of a break in employment wouldn't have been made until the code was resolved. We would need your P45 details to offer constructive advice.

Yeah, they sent me a letter a few weeks later i'm on 647L code now

I called them up today and she said as long as you sent your p45 in we will give a rebate, but there's a backlog at the moment but i should hear back in a few weeks and it'll be issued in my next pay check - no need for me to do anything further

On my most recent payslip my tax code is now 647LM1 i think the M1 means month 1?? :S

And i'm definitely going to earn less than £6475 this year, which is why i shouldn't pay the amount of tax i've been paying... so i've been told

    That is emergency code.

Sounds more as though you've been on 'BR'? Which would result in 20% being deducted from anything paid to you.

You won't get a refund 'in your pay cheque' ..... whilst the 'Month 1' remains in your Code.
