Zutter bind it all and mount board

I'd like to make some books for birthday and christmas presents using the zutter machine. I have found a lot of people use mount board as the covers. What thickness should the mount board be and is it best to cut the large sheets or buy pre-cut? And will the zutter be able to cut through the different thicknesses?
