"Debt" Problems

Hello folks - apologies if this post is in the wrong part of the forum , but I thought this would be the most suitable place
My wife has received two letters, from two seperate debt collection agencies , threatening court action if she doesn't pay up ( £400 on one , £1200 on another )
We have had absolutely no dealings with the companies behind the bills so as you can imagine , it is very frustrating
A couple of key points - The bills are sent in my Wifes Maiden name ( she has not used this name for 4 years ! )
Also , when we contacted the first company , they asked my wife if she had lived in a couple of former addresses (in Lancashire) - she has never lived there in her life , They guy said "ah , I'm very sorry - I'll get that sorted out " and since then , we have not received any more letters from that company
So - I am guessing that somehow , another woman with the same name as my wife has racked up a load of debt - some smart !!!! detective has "traced" this woman , and ended up thinking my wife is this debt monster from Lancs - and it seems he has submitted his findings to some kind of databse - and we are getting all her threatening letters - Surely if it was a simple case of Identitiy theft , we would have received more
communications from te companies than the letters from the debt collectors ?
The most annoying thing is that we have a spotless credit record , I don't see why we should lose that because some woman can't pay her bills & some debt collection agency can't do their job properly !
Is there an official body we can register our concern with ?

Have you checked your credit reference files? That is the first thing you must do.
This happened to me a few weeks ago. I got a demand from a DCA about £750 to do with Southern Gas and Electric. I phoned the DCA and they asked if I had lived at an address in Guildford, Surrey. Then said the same thing - ah, sorry, not you! I have heard nothing since!
Check the CRF and see what has happened there. Usually the letters sent out by the DCA are to frighten you into paying, so I wouldn't have thought anything would have been done re your credit rating.
Good Luck!0
