Mattress toppers - Foam or Feather?

Hi.

I recently bought a new super king mattress from Dreams which has turned out to be too firm and I am waking up with sore hips and shoulders and want to buy a topper to soften the blow.

Various things are said such as memory foam can be too hot, and smells while feather or down toppers don't provide much support - and also smell like ducks!

I would be very grateful if anyone could provide advice about this as there is so much choice I want to make the right decision.

Thank you

Can't you exchange it under the Dreams comfort guarantee?

If you want to make the mattress feel softer, then the options are really either a reflex foam topper (which can be hot), or one of the really thick fleece type toppers. Dunelm do some that are called something like teddy bear toppers, or the more expensive ones will be sheep skin.
  • Thanks Tim, I looked into the Dunelm Mill product and it seems to get great reviews. May I ask why you would you not recommend a low density memory foam or feather/hollowfibre mattress topper?

I got a memory foam topper for my son's mattress, yes it does smell for the frist few night but if you can air it out it will go away, my son has had it for just over 2 weeks and it there is no smell at all now.
As for it being hot i couldnt say, my son tends to be hot all year round and doesnt seem to be hotter in anyway since having it.
    Hope This Helps
  • Hi

I bought a Northern Nights goose feather topper which I kept inside a mattress protector. I loved it. No smells that I was aware of. It did get a bit flat from time to time but I just fluffed it up and it was back to its peak. It really perked up a disgraceful excuse of a mattress. I saw it on one of the shopping channels when I was channel flicking. I then looked for it (and purchased it) on ebay. It was sheer bliss.

The one thing I would say is that the feathers are starting to stick out but because it was in a protector it made no difference to me.

Because memory foam doesn't make a mattress softer. It moulds to your body to reduce pressure points. It is open celled so that you sink right into it, then you get support from the springs below.

You should NEVER use a memory foam, hollow fibre or feather topper to either revive an old worn out mattres, or an unsupportive one. It's the springs that need changing.

    Hi everyone,

I thought I'd update you all on what I decided to do in the end.

I ended up purchasing a very high quality feather and down topper. There is nothing wrong with the topper as such, but it does not do anything to make the mattress feel softer. All that happens is the feathers compress under your bodyweight leaving you feeling the firmness of the mattress.

I guess this would happen less with a memory foam topper but am not sure.
