You are talking about giving a retailer permission to store your card details for future use....Yes? This is completely different to paying for an order and expecting that the transaction is complete. Unless joeysdub gave permission for Tiffanys to retain his card details for future purchases then I do not see what relevance it has to his complaint. As an independent High Street retailer I have no need to ever retain or store my customers card details nor would I ever suggest that I do. Furthermore, even if joeysdub had given permission then surely this would not allow any retailer to take more money from a previously completed transaction. So lets say you bought a book from Amazon for £10.00, the book was damaged upon receipt so you sent it back and asked for a new one....But then you find that Amazon has charged you a further £10.00 for the book as it had risen in price since you originally bought it! NO not a cats hell is that ever going to happen and you would be on here too asking the same advice as the op/ Like I said I can only recount what I KNOW but should anyone on here actually know exactly where the op stands then please can they tell him.

If they HAVE charged you £15 because the ring has increased in price since you bought it, I personally think this is sharp practice.

They will be pricing the ring you returned at the price you paid PLUS £15 so to charge you £15 also means they are charging twice.

Are you absolutely sure that this £15 is because the ring has increased in price.
    Could it be shipping charges?

I notice that the extract in your first post says:
'To return or exchange your gift selection please follow the instructions included with your package.
Alternatively non-faulty merchandise will be accepted at Tiffany & Co. locations in the United Kingdom excluding those concession based (Harrods, Selfridges Oxford Street & Manchester) and additionally excluding those airport based (Heathrow T5 & T3). Merchandise will be available for refund, or exchange (excluding any shipping charges) providing it is returned in the same saleable condition as when purchased, within 30 days of the date of purchase and if accompanied by the original sales receipt. Refunds will be issued to the original form of tender.'

If it isn't shipping charges, I'd ask them where it says in their T&Cs that in the case of exchange they will charge any extra on.

My friend had his card charged without his permission. He went for a meal with a group of friends and when he go home checked his internet banking and found that the restaurant had not only taken payment for the bill but made a second transaction for £12 after he had left! It turns out that they had missed something off the bill and simply charged his card again when the party had gone.

He consulted the fraud department of his bank who told his this was illegal practice and the restaurant returned the money.

I presume Tiffanys would have to seek permission before charging anything to your card.

Is it not a charge to resize the ring?

The op said it was an exchange, not a resize.
  • Thanks to all who posted on this thread. I e-mailed Tiffany's cust service on the Sat night I posted this thread, and on Monday morning I had a message on my phone and an e-mail apologising for the error and promising a refund immediately (i haven't checked yet, but I assume it's there!).

I didn't probe the issue of keeping my card details and charging without my permission. I got my money back, so I'm happy!

    Thanks
  • Oh, one last thing....Gordikin, thank you particularly for you comments. I found them invaluable in assisting me with this issue and felt that they were in the true spirit of this forum. It is comments like yours that encourage those seeking advice to use these forums and those wanting to genuinely help, take part. I only hope that one day my knowledge of internet shopping is as obviouslt expansive as yours and that I am as motivated and enthusiastic in my readiness to insult those trying to be helpful.

    Cheers!

...so far. Nothing is 100% safe. Customers should be given the choice of if they want their credit card information retained or not.
