Optical prescription question

Options
Hi

As I have one artificial lens (following cataract removal) my near vision prescription is different in each eye - one eye is +2.50 and the other is -0.25.

My question is this: if my glasses order confirmation shows +2.25 on both sides is that correct?

Thanks

Lesley

    Post up the full prescription.

If +2.25 is a "reading addition", you have to add this to the distance precription to get the reading prescription, so may be OK.

If +2.25 is the actual reading precription, that doesn't sound right given what you said about the difference between the two eyes.
  • Hi tidus

    Right: Sph -2.50 ADD -0.25
    Left: Sph +0.25 ADD +2.50

Do you need the cyl as well?

This looks to me like reading glasses would be -2.75 for right and +2.75 for left.

    Cheers

What does your qualified optician say?

My optician has given me a prescription which I'm getting filled online.

They have "confirmed" lenses of +2.25 for both eyes and that seems wrong to me.

Well I guess you pays your money and takes your choice.

Well let's put it this way - you don't understand the prescription and it would appear the online retailer doesn't. Sounds like a false economy to me.

    Hi again Lesley.

    This isn't making any sense.

Cyl would be helpful because for one thing it should be present in your reading prescription. The other issue is the huge difference between reading additions in the two eyes.

Reading additions are generally equal, although they may differ in a younger person who has had cataract surgery to the extent that a reading add may be present in only eye (the one which has had the cataract removed) and not in the other. But I have never seen a negative reading add and can't really think of any circumstances that I would presribe one.

If you are going to be supplied with lenses that are +2.25 in both eyes they do not match the presription. Where is the Cyl, for a start...

I'd contact your Optometrist to comfirm your written presription copy is correct, particularly with regard to the negative add in the one eye.

If however, you've already ordered them.... have to hope they work OK. Such problems are much easier to sort out when you buy from your Optometrist. As has been said, you pays your money you takes your choice....
  • Hi tidus

Ok here's my background: I have been wearing varifocals since my early 30's, and had a left cataract removal in my late 30's. When they chose the artificial lens they said they could correct my prescription to a a certain extent but it would be best not to go all the way as it would be too different to my right eye, or something! It was a few years ago and I'm struggling to remember the details.

My full prescription from Specsavers is:
    Right: -2.50 -0.75 130.0 Prism 1.00 Base Out
    Near: -0.25 -0.75 130.0

    Left: +0.25 -2.00 175.0 (ex cataract eye)
    Near: +2.50 -2.00 175

My prescription last year had 0.00 for the right eye near.

The confirmed single vision order from Selectspecs, which I have queried twice, is:

    Right: -2.50 -0.75 130 Add 2.25
    Left: 0.25 -2.00 175 Add 2.25

This looks completely wrong. Fortunately I'm just after the frames so I can get varifocals added by Ciliary Blue. The frames were cheaper with a prescription than without. But SelectSpecs don't seem to be able to get the single vision right despite my protests.

They have your prescription correct, albeit written down in a different format. If you have specified reading or near glasses, I assume that they would be fine.
