Hi all,
I'm just trying to do my husbands self assessment for the first time. I have kept the books as organised as possible so everything should be easy enough for me to input into the online form, however i'm just wanting advice to find out if he will be entitled to claim something for the heating lighting etc he uses as he is based from home. If so how do we work out how much he can put down?
He started out self employed on 1st july 2010. He is an independent turf consultant and is based from home working 40 hours a week (at least). We live in a 2 bed back to back and he uses the attic area of the house for his business during the day and occasionally works in the living room on an evening when the children are in bed so as not to disturb them.
Sorry if i have not given enough info please let me know what else you may need.
I have worked the mileage allowance out at 40p per mile. Is this correct?
Thanks in advance

The return which needs filing now covers the year to 5th April 2010 so I assume you made a typo and your husband started self employment in 2009.
Any reasonable method of apportioning the costs will be acceptable but if you are happy with £3 per week HMRC have intimated they will not query that level of claim.
Mileage allowance is 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and then it drops to 25p.If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it0 -
Agree with either £3 per week or a proportion of the costs incurred.
As for mileage claim if you elect this method then you cannot change methods unless you change the vehicle.
The alternative is to claim a proportion of all costs incurred but this may require more work.Running challenge 2014 = 689k / 800k0 -
Thank you for your replies x
I didn't make a typing error my husband did start work self employed in july 2010 so does that mean ihe doesn't need to send in a self assessment form this time?
We haven't had a letter or anything requesting he send one in but we did get a letter back in august saying they acknowledge he is now self employed and will therefore need to send in self assessments?0 -
His first taxable trading peiod is from July 10 to 5 April 2011. This is the 10-11 tax year and the first self-assessment return will be due 31 Jan 12. I will PM you something about the choice of year-end, which amongst other things can make a massive difference in future as to how long you get to prepare accounts and tax info.Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0

Not if HMRC haven't asked you to (for reasons other than the recent self employment)?
You should have registered the self employment with them within 3 months. And your first SA filing for that will cover the year to April 2011 ......... SA Return due by 31.1.12If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Have registered as SE , and have received the letter acknowledging that i am SE and will need to fill in a S A . i wish they would make it more clear , i have been paniking. Cheers WW.0

So long as they haven't sent you a paper SA Return or a 'Notice to file' (for 09-10) ...... then the timeline in my previous post applies. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
