Doggie Bags

Was just wondering if anyone else had heard of the new legislation that does not allow you to take a doggie bag from a restaurant. I was at the Millbrook Lodge about 3 weeks ago and having ordered the braising steak with onion gravy. Having only eatten about a 1/3 of it I thought I'd take it for the dog who was waiting in the car (dog was only there as it was a last minute thought as we were passing and as the day was cool thought he'd be OK in the car fro a wee bit. Don't make a habit of leaving him in it) Anyways I started to scape the gravy of the meat to put it in a napkin when the person I was with reminded me how much my dog loves gravy so I thought I could ask it to be wrapped in a wee containor or something. When the waiter came to clear I ask him about the doggie bag and he said that due to new legislation they were no longer allowed to give them out - so I said well what if I wrap it and he told me he couldn't let me do that before lifting the plate away promptly.Wouldn't have minded only there was quite a large portion and I had paid for teh meat so surely its mine to do what I want with.
I've said to a few people about this and they haven't heard of the legislation either and when I've been out a few times since in a number of restaurants I have had no trouble getting a doggie bag!

I heard about that legislation years ago and was told that it was because if you took food home and got sick you could claim against the supplier of the food, but to be honest I havent came across any hotels/restaurants that actually use it. Just last week I was in an italian restaurant and had pizza, I never even asked for the rest to be taken home, the waitress automatically put in it a box and set it discreetly beside us, I though it was really nice

I know of many restaurants that will not allow a dioggy abg to leave the premises (offically) and the reason is simply for fear of people not looking after it and then eating it well it is long past its best by date and sudenly all breaks loose on the old orifice front (and back). I had not realised though that there was any legislation about it.
Funny the difference of attitudes... in America not only will they give you a doggy bag it is a large plastic tray that they normally top up with some additional veg, gravy and (if they are in a good mood) a few extra slices of meat). Either way they seem to positively encourage it.

I waitress part time and a few months ago we were told that we were not allowed to supply doggie bags because of legislation but the manager couldn't supply the relevant bits of legislation. What we now do is tell customers asking for a doggie bag that unfortunately the restaurant's health and safety policy do not allow us to supply a doggie bag for the reasons previously stated by Ivanopinion. If a customer states that the meal is theirs since they have paid for it we will supply a plastic bag but we have had cases were customers simply go to the loos and come back with a handful of paper towels to wrap their food and some regulars now bring tinfoil with them.0

Personally, I wouldn't be bothered, but if I wanted to & they said no, I'd say ok then, I should be finished it in about 3 hours.Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!0

i used to work in a restaurant about 5 years ago and we werent allowed to do this. it was to do with the fact if the custoemr reheated it and did it wrong and got food poisioning, we could still be held accountable. staff were allowed to do it though!love you lots like jelly tots0

Like many of the others on this thread I have never had trouble getting a doggy bag. You were unfortunate to get an overzealous waiter who whipped your plate away he could have easily let you take the meat and gavy and turned a blind eye. I actually carry a small plastic bag in my handbag just in case. Actually one place the waitress actually gave me a few more titbits for Lacey so there was a very happy fat Jack Russell!0
