Obviously you can't wear something you don't own but what would you wear for an interview?

I would go smart casual to an interview, i always have and i have always got the job i have gone for.

From the jobs fairs i have been to all what was on offer was cold callers for a window company and a few HR people wanting to get applications for jobs that were never going to exist.

A suit can be got pretty cheap from places like asda or tesco, if you do it right you can get 1 for max of £40 but might be less but cant remember how much less

Can't be too cheap as it will show and can be more of a negative then smart trousers and a polo shirt.
  • If this is one employer who is recruiting for a variety of jobs (this is what I think you are saying), then a suit wouldn't be out of place as they might well use this as an initial weeding out process.

Is this a bone fide company? Have you done any background research about the company and what they offer etc... might be useful if you get into a dialogue about any jobs that might be on offer.

That is a lot of hidden unemployed - the figure is actually around 2.5 million.

ok believe the figure the government tell you and look an idiot. the unemployment figure is a hell of a lot more than 2.5 million.

You can get a quality suite from a charity shop. My local BHF store has a good range for £15 complete. Add a couple of quid for a good shirt and bingo!.

    Hi all,

Thanks for your input on the job fair, very much appreciated.

I already have a suit thanks, i've had a few interviews just not quite got past that final step into employment.

The fair is only one employer so will probably dress smart to make a good impression.

I have had a phone call today from a company I applied to back in the beginning of December inviting me to an interview next Wednesday so with a bit of luck....

Diable. I'm 42. Newport itself is miserable, if you mean how is it for job hunting then it is very miserable!

    Thanks again all.

Of course, but if people choose not to be counted ...

That's not quite how it works. Many people are unable to claim Job Seekers Allowance. For example if a partner is in work and they have no contributions. Unemployment figures could be 50% higher than the official figures or more.

Regards getting a suit, now is a good time to look in Marks and Spencer Factory outlet/clearance stores (they're popping up in a few places other than factory outlets now like retail parks). I picked up a suit recently that would have cost around £200 originally for under £50, which is probably more down to luck than anything as it is usually somewhat difficult to find jackets and trousers matching in the sizes you want - still worth a look though.

Next Clearance used to be really good, I remember looking through rails and rails of suit jackets all at £5 each (some even cashmere/wool blend etc) aiming to go for the plainer ones to later find trousers to match, and silk ties at £1 some that were originally £18, and I stocked up. Sadly I have since put weight on so none of those jackets fit me any more. Next clearance prices have steadily increased and I think they're no longer worth it, but suppose it could be worth a look.

Asda and Tesco are better than nothing, I would say Asda tends to have better offerings than Tesco. One important thing is that the lapel is supposed to be a long slow curved bend, avoid any jackets where this is a flat crease and certainly do not slap your iron on top of it and press a crease into it there as on a cheap suit it will never come out. If you need to iron iron underneath the top of the lapel.
Wanted a job, now have one.
