countrywide

hi there

our fixed mortgage runs out in feb, we are with halifax.

Countrywide are coming round tomorrow as a independent mortgage adviser to talk about the mortgage. they called as we used them as solicitors when we move house 5 years ago.

can i just calify that they will NOT try to sell a mortgage to us as we are not thinking about getting new mortgage as gonna stay with halifax as trying to sell and will prob find it hard to get another mortgage as we have had no payrises in the 5 years to therefore in worse position than when we brought. we just want to see what is out there....is that what they do? or do you think going to another independent advisor is the way to go????

If you've decided to stay on Halifax's SVR then it is a waste of time having a meeting with a mortgage adviser. I'd phone and cancel as you're really just wasting their time.

are you sure that firm offers independent mortgage advice service ?

A good independent would look at rates options offered by your existing lender.. in fact given some lenders will pay for rate swaps , most advisers will look at certian in-house swaps

Countrywide will look at Halifax's own deals as well as the posibility of remortgaging elsewhere.

I dont think they should be saying they are independent though, I though you had to offer a choice of paying a broker fee or not to claim independence. With Countrywide there is only the option to pay the fee (although it will be waived if you take a Halifax retention deal)

They will give you free advice though so if there is a deal out there for you you can find out about it. You will only have to pay them when any mortgage completes

Countrywide are not independent. Their website indicates they charge £149 and keep commission. Independents have to rebate or offset the commission if fee option is selected.

Tell the mortgage adviser that then. There is no point them wasting hours on you when you have no intention of using them.

There is no point seeing any adviser of any classification if you are not intending to use their services.

  • hi there, thank you for the replies.

i have cancelled the countrywide mortgage person, a few reasons, 1) they said they do not charge a fee and he laughed at me, and made me feel really small when i asked about this. 2) i think i need to read a bit more into the mortgage and fixed rate to understand it in my own head 3)i think i need to talk to my own mortgage prson to understand where we stand and what our mortgage repayments will be etc.

so i cancelled as i didnt want to waste his time on soemthing that i didnt understand.

He is the sort of person you should be talking to if you need to understand it better, but to laugh at you and make you feel small is never going to get you two off on the right foot!

The Countrywide advisors advice is free, its the admin to get the mortgage the completion that is charged. So you can pick his brains as much as you want and learn everything you need before you will be charged. Although this will probably annoy the hell out of him!

I think you were right to cancel the appointment, I wouldnt go back if he made you feel like that, please dont think all Mortgage Consultants are like that. I would get a recomendation from a friend and speak to them to find out what you need to know before making a decision

    Good Luck

    Complain to his manager! T**t!

Point out that this has just cost the company a remortgage (they dont know you were going to stick on the SVR) and any future remortgages you could have done in your mortgage-able life!

You'll find a decent Mortgage Broker, theres plenty about
