dependants question for mortgage app

Hi

My partner and I are just about to make an application for a mortgage. He has a 5 year old daughter from a previous relationship who lives with his ex. He pays his ex £250 a month maintenance through the CSA. My question is how does he answer the number of dependants question on the mortgage app? Does he say '0' and then add his £250 maintenance as a regular outgoing under the maintenance/CSA box or does he have to say '1', even though his daughter does not live at home? It makes a big difference to the amount we can borrow if he has to say 1 dependant and £250 maintenance!! We're applying to Nationwide. Thanks for any help.
