How to buy used pallets?

I've just been down to look at my new allotment!! It needs lots of work but I'm really looking forward to it. I want a shed and have found a couple of websites that show how people have made sheds from used pallets and I fancy having a go at it. Apparently I would need about 25 pallets but I have searched the net and can't find any info on where to get them from. I've found companies that buy them but can't seem to find anyone that sells them. Does anyone have any ideas? If not does anyone have any idea how much they sell for?

Hi Bunglegirl
if you lived up here you could have them for free !.
Can i suggest you have a look round some industrial estates in your area and maybe ask some (who have lots about) owners for a fewliving on the "edge"0 -
If you live in Dorset/Hampshire border let me know as I can hold of some for free.
Also agree with niccy, most industrial sites have to pay to have these taken away so will be happy for you to collect them.0 -
I don't think many places sell them secondhand, they are normal dumped, so you may see signs for them on your travels being offered to people who will collect.
Good luck
edited to add: what a great way to get a shed done!! Do you have any links for the shed building method??0 -
This is the link showing how to do it:-

There is another link at the bottom of that page to someone who made a chicken shed type thing in the UK.
I will have to change it somewhat to suit my needs but it is a great example of what can be done! I'm very excited - my boyfriend who shall be working under my direction is not quite so excited :rotfl:
Great ideas on where to look for them - didn't even think of looking for them - so we just went for a cruise and have located two industrial units that look like they might be worth a visit. They had loads stacked up outside so shall be popping to see them on Monday I think!
I was thinking about doing a blog type thing (never done one before!) on the allotment and the shed so if I do I will post a link and you can see the progress.
Tomorrows actions include arranging friends to come to an 'allotment clearing party'...0 -
I often use pallets for various jobs.Try to find good, solid, same size ones.It will make the job easier.
you could do with a roofrack to shift them , BUT only 3-4 at a time, 25 would be unstable;)living on the "edge"0 -
Thanks for the advice niccy - we have a largeish trailer which should make collecting them a bit easier although I still think that we will be looking at several trips to get all that we need.0

have a word at your Local Jewsons if you have one or builders merchant. They no longer take deposits on them and builders tend to chase them to collect which they are reluctant to do so you could do them a favour0

Try your local freecycle. There have been several lots of pallets offered on our local freecycle site over the last month or so. I also agree with asking your local builders merchants or woodyards. They are often happy for people to take away pallets especially ones which may be slightly damaged. If you're going to dismantle them to make a shed then a few broken slats won't be the end of the earth you just might need a few extra pallets overall.I like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0

I'm signed up to three local frecycle sites and have never seen pallets on there before - will keep my eyes peeled though as I'm also watching for any gardening tools etc.
I've got tomorrow free so I think that I will go out and have a word with the local businesses that I think may have them including building yards as mentioned.
I have started my allotment blog! It's very boring at the moment but hope to have photos on soon and I'll show the progress of the shed build!

Thanks for all your help - I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow...0 -

For anyone in or near Bristol, the Bristol Wood Recycling Project would be a good place to look (and I believe the site has links to similar projects elsewhere if you're NOT near Bristol!) NB That IS the right address, but the site seems to be down.
So here's a link to the National Community Wood Recycling Project website, so you can ALL check whether there's wood recycled near you if you need any.
And, since I can't find that site on the 'useful links' thread with a quick search, I'll pm Arkonite Babe with the details!Signature removed for peace of mind0
