I want to buy something nice to wear, but not too expensive...hopefully with a small hint of tartan. Can anyone make any suggestions :-)

I think if you are largish then I would wear a black dress (long if it's that sort of do) with a bright or tatrtan pashmina/sash and then pin it with a large brooch or one of those gorgeous corsages (although if you're handy with a needle you could make one yourself). Traditionally ladies would dress like this so this would be a modern take on it.0
