Work paying for collegues travel and not mine!!

I'm quite new to my job (been here 2 months). And I have since found out while other new staff have joined they get their oyster cards paid for by the company and I don't!! Don't suppose I have a chance of getting this if I complain as it wasnt written in my contract? Is it worth making a fuss?

    It is worth asking.

Your company must have a travel policy so feel free to ask about that rather than rushing in complaining.

There may be all sorts of reasons why others have their oyster cards "paid for".

How do you know the other staff get this?

I think the valuable word in the last post is "ask" - not, as you put it "complain"! "Making a fuss" when you have been there a grand total of two months may very well mean that you are marking your cards, not getting one!

Ask nicely. If no satisfactory answer seems to be forthcoming just press the barrel gently to their temple, not too hard or else it will leave a little red ring.
  • Maybe your colleagues have taken an interest free 'season ticket' type loan from your employer. Is there anything mentioned in your staff handbook.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

Also, it might depend on the terms of your workplace. Where I used to work, the company had a deal with the ATOCs that they would provide 'Privilege Tickets' for staff to use on all National Rail travel - 75% off all train fares. But that ended for anyone entering employment after a certain date, so I didn't get it (dammit!). So some staff had this benefit; others didn't.

Eventually they implemented something similar for new staff, but there still wasn't parity.

    It happens, sometimes. :)

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".
  • But he is saying that new staff have this and he doesn't.

Is it part of the london weighting allowance or some such similar? Depending on where you live?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Missed the 'other new staff' part. Sorry!

  • Thanks for all your replies, I'll have a quiet little word with the the person in charge. And see where it gets me, as of the nature of my job travel is required between zones on the underground/buses as I have to visit a few offices now and then, though I have been using my oyster card which I top up weekly anyway to get me from my flat to work for work travel. I know the other staff get this as they have told me!

Some companies will think because you have a monthly travel card then they can ask you to travel around for free, ask your manager what the policy is as you use a PAYG travel card to get to and from work but have to pay extra for travelling to client sites.
