Is fruit cheaper at big supermarkets or local green grocers?

Title says it all, where is the cheaper place to buy fruit?

It depends. Aldi & Lidl can't really be beaten for price on their fruit & veg specials. If you have a street market nearby, i would say generally that it would be cheaper than the supermarkets but you may find that the stuff lasts no time till it's past its best. I find greengrocers shops (as opposed to market stalls) more in line with supermarket prices. I'm sure others will chip in with different views.

If it's on a really good offer the supermarket, but generally the green grocer.

  • Market stalls, hands down.

I don't like going to Aldi for fruit and veg any more...the last lot of sweet potatoes and TWO lots of onions had already started to go rotten when we opened the bags!! I like my produce loose and sold in paper bags :)

Years ago nobody could touch the supermarkets for value but since they have been trying to increase their margins on the sly, I agree with Nekomalik.

Regardless of price, quality is usually better in the supermarkets. The stuff I see on market stalls and green grocers is, more often than not, tired and manky looking, and the taste is pretty foul too.
