paper bags for mushrooms

When in a supermarket often the only paper bags for smallish vegetables are for mushrooms......so why not pack other small vegetables in them as well.

Supermarkets do this for shelf-life reasons, rather than to help the environment.

Mushrooms need to either be in paper bags, or if in plastic then left uncovered otherwise they sweat and rot.

I'm not saying they shouldn't use paper for everything (they definitely should) - just that they are only doing it to maximise their profits..

You have to watch that you don't get caught out paying more for your veg if you put them in mushroom bags. I nearly found myself paying mushroom prices for carrots

That might be handy if you do it with veg that is more expensive than mushrooms ;)
  • I think mushrooms are the most expensive by weight. I used to work in a fruit and veg shop and the price for mushrooms was per quarter rather than per pound because otherwise they seemed so much more expensive than everything else.

I did, at Tesco. The cashier (saturday staff) charged me for mushrooms, even though it contained tomatoes! It means they have to think about it!

I think it comes down to speed and therefore throughput at the tills. If a cashier has to look inside (or in through a window) for each bag then it'd slow them down. THen they'd have to employ more cashiers to process the same number of customers

I leave what I can loose, and pile them onto the conveyor belt by type, then put them all into the same carrier bag.

Yes, I get offered bags for them all, but say no, I'm going to wash them before I use them ,why waste the plastic??
