in Cutting tax
Excuse me if this is obvious, but tax is a real brain freezer for this old thickie!
I changed jobs in November 2010 and all through 2010 the Tax Code on my payslip was 647L
but on my P45:
Leaving date 19/11/2010
Tax code at leaving 603L
and underneath it says: Cumulative
Why the difference?
Will I have I paid too little tax in 2010?
Presumably I'll pay more tax in the new job?

What are the pay and tax figures on the P45 and do they agree with the same figures on your last payslip?0
-
You need to find out why the tax code has changed. What is the code on your new job payslips ? If the figures of gross pay and tax paid on your P45 were correct as to what you actually paid then as long as your current employer is using the correct code you will pay the correct tax this year. Have you got any taxable benefits, medical, car allowance etc ?0
-
Your P45 seems to be wrong - the tax code 603 is the standard one for 2008/09
You will have paid the correct tax whilst your code was 647L
You will pay too much tax in the new job until the tax code is corrected
I'd say your old employer has boobed.
All that assumes nothing unusual about your circumstances0 -

Nope. No taxable benefits.Your P45 seems to be wrong - the tax code 603 is the standard one for 2008/09

Nothing unusual as far as I am aware. I suppose I'll have to get them to issue another P45.0 -
Im confused by your last reply.
What is the PAYE code number on your last payslip from your old employer and on the P45 they issued.
If I understood you above they are both 647L (with no X on the P45)
If this is the case you new employer is the one to speak to.The only thing that is constant is change.0 -

The code on my last payslip is 647L
The Code at leaving on the P45 is 603L
However, the Total pay and Total tax to date are the same on both P45 and last payslip.0 -
I think that you will have to do this through HMRC, I don't think that P45s can be reissued.
They just need to issue you with a 647L tax code and it will be sorted. The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
The important question is what tax code is your current employer using. If anything other than 647L with no suffixes then get onto your tax office to sort it out.0

if you want to tell us your total pay to date (after pension deductions) and the total tax you have paid then it should be possible to see what the actual situation is0

I've had one pay packet from the new company using 647L (I quoted this off my payslip, as I hadn't received the P45 at the time)
I've just called the old company and he's looking into it and hopefully get it put right. He reckons it's a problem with HMRC online services.0
