Private pension contributions on self assessment?

Options
Hello

can someone confirm whether you need to enter private pension contributions on self assessment? My husband thinks he needs to.

He has already had the tax relief applied to his contributions (in the form of having extra 20% added to his pension pot) so what would he be claiming for on self assessment?

many thanks

If he were a higher rate taxpayer then he'd get additional relief back in the shape of a tax refund. If he were earning between £100k and £112,950 things would be better still - for every £40 he put into the pension, he'd get £20 extra thrown in by the pension provider - and then £40 tax relief back.

No, he is a basic rate taxpayer, so does he still need to enter the amounts?

Interesting what you said about higher rate tax payers. You put in £40 then get it back again? That doesn't seem right. Not saying you are wrong, just seems crazy that rich seem to get richer and us basic rate tax payers get poorer. No surprise there.

    thanks

Strictly he should enter them - but it should not affect his tax to pay.
