Change to contacted hours

My mum has a contract at work for 40 hours and has been continually employed since 2001. A new manager wants to reduce her hours to 37.5 hrs. Can they do this?.
Also she is worried that they may reduce her hourly rate in line with newer members of staff.
Thanks

hi
how long has she worked with the company for?
i believe they are aloud to change your working hours but there is a set period of notice that they have to give, though i think this again depends on time with an employer and what it says in your mums written contract
with reguards to pay they cannot change her pay unless it increases, even if someone is demoted then their pay cannot be reduced

Hi Bury, Sparkle is incorrect, an employer can reduce your pay in certain circumstances, but in reality it won't happen. If they do want to reduce what your mother costs in relation to newer staff, they will simply not give her future pay rises until her pay is in line with the newcomers.
As for reducing her hours, yes again in certain circumstances they can do this. However, your mum could potentially be onto a winner here. If she is salaried, rather than hourly paid, the deal she would agree to would be reduction in hours, but no pay cut. If the employer won't agree to that, then she should refuse to agree to reduce her hours and just wait and see if they'll try to do it the more complex route.
Chances are they may get it wrong, especially if they are a small employer, and if they do, hello hello Industrial Tribunal...!0 -

I think you will find that someones pay can be reduced if they are demoted!!!
If someone is downgraded to a lower grade than they will not continue to receive the same rate of pay as when they were a higher gradeI have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes
