'Will we soon call UK high streets 'outdoor shopping malls?'' blog discussion

  • RE: supermarkets vs high steets, I can't help but agree the opening times are the problem. I'd much rather buy fruit and veg, meat, etc in individual high street specialist shops but I leave home at 7am, get back home at 6pm monday-friday, and would rather spend the weekend doing something I enjoy rather than food shopping. All the local town centres close to me are shut by 5.30 on weekdays, whereas the supermarkets are open til at least 10, so they get my business!

I do prefer Newcastle city centre to the metrocentre for other shopping though. While eldon square gives the mall experience, going into newcastle gives me the best of both worlds as ther are loads of alternative places I can wander into if I go slightly off the beaten track, whereas the metrocentre just gives me the same as every other mall in the UK. Although I must admit if I've got shopping trip planned and the weather is really lousy, it's the metrocentre every time. I'm so fickle!
