I can't watch any more.....

Countryfile on BBC 1

Talking about british factory egg producers struggling to survive because of imports.

What the f*ck is going on when we are meant to feel sorry for these people who have invested £20M in a british poultry industry because they can't compete with imports?

It's a joke.

It's possibly a really badly timed article too. After all, I would want to buy British eggs at the moment after the German dioxin scare and I'm sure a lot of others feel the same too. That'll give the egg industry a bigger boost than any government input. Wouldn't eat factory eggs by choice though.

Battery farming is barbaric. For all its tiresome 'Green' rhetoric, the EU shows its true colours when it footles around banning incandescent lightbulbs, while still allowing the wholesale torture of animals.

But can you afford to buy wholesome grown/farmed food as well as well as cutting down on your own environmental impact by cutting down on food mileage oil consumption etc etc?

In a word. yes. You don't need to feed chickens with dioxin-rich filth to produce affordable eggs.

The choice is yours in what you choose to eat burning wood also causes dioxins. If you want want to eat good food then grow your own or buy locally from reputable farmers. Mass produced food like liquid eggs transported from country to country is liable to infection, why do you think ASDA and Morrisons sell food so cheaply? Most people don't care as all they are worried about is feeding a family of six for under £80 per week.

My wife and I were just talking about this last week we intend to start paying much more attention to where our food is coming from and pay more for free range. We think it's definitely worth paying the extra for free range chickens and eggs.

Free range doesn't mean much. They're still going to be fed manufactured pellets. Not enough worms.

Very rare to find true 'free range' - look at the small wording and most will will have some caveat about the time outside/what they eat etc. Poultry is merely a commodity to farmers - the fact they can walk and make a noise (when allowed) is just a byproduct... There are there to make money first....

If you know a local farmer/small farm shop, enquire in there to see if you can find a truely free range source...

I would actually like to get a few chickens (don't know anything about it yet but our friends have about 4 chickens). Nothing to do with cheapness just knowing they are coming from chickens that are well looked after. My wife isn't keen though, but I'm working on persuading her.
