Ironing Silk Shirts.

As a single male trying to iron my own shirts I am having a terrible time with a couple of casual silk ones - always have a wrinkled appearance no matter what pains I take.

    Hello tomthebomb

Be careful with the heat setting on your iron. The care label will probably recommend a low heat or level 1.

Use a water spray to dampen the shirt and it should help to remove the creases.

I would suggest that you iron them while they're still wet (and I mean WET, like straight out of the washer). I've worked with silk for many years and most silk shirts can be ironed at a reasonable iron temperature without scorching - a bit less than a cotton setting is fine. The only way to get them completely uncreased is to make sure that they're wet when you start. Iron the shirt all over while it's wet then hang it up straight away. Water sprays on dry silk can mean that you get dry-ish patches which will then leave a slight water mark when they've dried out completely.
Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then, when you do criticise him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes.

A woman who makes silk garments came to give a talk at our WI this summer. She said that silk can be ironed at at reasonable temperature IF the garment has been sewn with silk thread. Many manufactureres use a polycotton or even artficial thread when making up silk clothes as it is much cheaper but it can melt if the iron is too hot.
  • Thanks a lot girls - I'm managing fine now after all your help.

    hello everyone,

i have a silk dress i purchased it about five years ago and just found it at the bottom of an old suitcase.

I don't want to iron it and it is full of creases - I've tried putting it in the bathroom on a hanger and turning the shower on full blast but to no avail it hasn't worked with the steam.

Any other suggestions would be gratefully appreciated

    Thanks Dee xxx

    Hi Msdee

Do you not want to iron it because it is silk? I looked for an older thread, and the nearest i could find was this one - ironing silk shirts. Do have a look as it helped the previous OP out, and i will merge this for you later on when you get more input

    Good luck missy!:)

Yes, I scorched a white dress one, but it was on such a low temp, gawd only knows what went wrong.

I'll wash it and then iron damp as pigpen suggests.

    Thanks girls
