Mobile phone offer

I noticed someone saying in the Sky thread that although there is a retention thread in another section they wouldn't have know until it was mentioned here.
Well just giving the heads up that exactly the same happens with mobile phone companies if you are out of contract. If you threaten to cancel they will offer almost anything to keep you just as Sky do.

Unlike sky though with mobile phone networks it really depends on your monthly usage. If you're not a heavy user they're not likely to offer you much and will just send you out your pac code.0

Totally agree, it's not that similar, I really want an iphone but refuse to up my monthly from the £15 I currently spend to the £35+ they want for an iPhone.....boooooo!
I also find Phones4U are great as they tend to buy you out of those ridiculously long 18-24 month contracts you stupidly signed upto agreeing to a pants phone that drives you nuts!
I promise myself I'll be more sensible every time but bottom line is the line rental for me, the cheaper the better!0 -
I am with 3. I tried to cancel, I told them I wanted to and they agreed to let me go (their sales person was trying to get me to believe that if I went a second over my call allowance with 02 or Orange, whom I am moving to, they will charge me £10 a minute...). I was told I needed to cancel nearer the time (end of feb).
A week later I get a letter through the door thanking me for continuing my contract and stating if I wanted to leave I'd have to pay the entire rest of the new contract upfront!
I think I may have sorted it now but just a heads up on anyone trying to cancel with 3, they seem to come from the same school as the Fitness First sales team, watch out!0 -
Plenty of discussion about retentions on the following link, and more appropriate since this isn't a grabbit.

I had the same problem with 3, I was with them for years but had to leave due to no coverage in my house with anyone other than Vodafone....only since the insulation was put in though!! Anyway, I got lots of lies and tall stories from them too when I threatened cancellation, I generally got a good deal though, especially if you take what they say with a pinch of salt and stand your ground. Luckily I have a little knowledge after working in the industry a few years back but I'm sure a lot fall for their stories...or they wouldn't use them would they?!
if it helps Jennie....Phones4U bought me out of my contract for 3 and gave me cash for the rest of the contract.0 -

I didn't have that long left to be honest, about 6 months I think. What you could do is drop your tariff down to the cheapest and see what cash Phones4u would give you towards a payout...may be worth a shot?0 -
I agree Sky will slash your monthly bill if you tell them you wish to cancel.0

didnt think i could change my tariff when i was in a contract - ill try going into the phones4u shop and see what they say. if i knew i could get out just a bit sooner it might help. my phones in for repair just now but i doubt a lot of my problems are with the phone.0 -
You can change your tariff, I'm certain on that, the worst case would be you couldn't swap for the first 6 months....unless you have an iPhone that is! Otherwise, call 3 and reduce it down, that's what phones4u did for my anyway, reduced down to lowest tariff and paid the remaining contract off for me, I then got a PAC code and transferred my number with me. Good luck!0
