2 completions?

Hi all, my friend set up a remortgage with abbey a few months ago but the solicitor didn't complete because they had penalties which they hadn't realised with the existing lender. With this in mind the solicitor planned to delay completion until a few months later. Within this time though, they visited a broker who found them a better deal with Natwest so they went ahead, realising that they couldn't complete for a couple of months. They assumed the first deal with abbey would not go through now because they had applied elsewhere and didn't mention to the first solicitor that they had found a better deal. As a result a few days after completion they have confirmation from the solicitor dealing with Natwest (the one they wanted) that completion has taken place but they have also been sent a welcome pack from Abbey (the one they didn't want!)! Surely both haven't completed?

Any ideas?

I guess what we need to know is, can 2 mortgage lenders, Abbey & Natwest, inadvertently complete on the same property if it all happened on the same day/within a day or so of each other?
