New settee - views re comfort please!

Mum's annex has just been completed and the sofa ordered in October was delivered today.

When looking for a sofa, we went to every furniture shop in Reading looking for a comfortable leather 3 seater. I must admit the one we finally bought (cost just over £800) was like a big squashy marshmallow.

Anyway, as I said above the sofa was delivered this morning and mum was so disappointed when she sat on it as the seat cushions are very hard. The delivery men said they should soften in a few weeks but she's not convinced!

Me and my sister have both said the sofa in the shop would have been sat on by hundreds of people but she is being a bit stubborn saying that all the sofa's in the shop would have been soft if that was the case, as they wouldn't have only sat on the one she has chosen! Fair point I suppose!

Has anyone had a sofa delivered that was as comfortable as the one they originally chose or has it been a case of wearing it in? I'd appreciate any help as I'm maybe being a bit unfair insisting she waits to see what happens in a few weeks!

leather sofas are nearly always hard when you get them, i am on my second leather sofa and they do take a while to soften.
  • Our leather sofa was soft from day 1, although we did pay a lot for it. It is a nice recliner, so comfy we have had it for about 4 years and I still fall asleep in it unwittingly! We got it from Furniture Village, had a look but can't see ours on there anymore. Might still be worth a look there though.

We got our leather sofas from M&S and they were much firmer than the ones on display in the shop. In fact I was a bit worried when they were delivered that I wasn't going to be comfortable. Rest assured they did soften up quite quickly infact 8 years on they are now a bit too soft - not too good for my back.

I cant remember what mine were like new, but I had them refurbed and called them straight back after they were delivered to complain about how hard they'd made the seats. They said if I was still unhappy after 6 weeks they would change the pads, needless to say either we got used to them or they softened up.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

they are never like the ones in the shop. if it was as soft as the one instore then it would be flat in a few weeks. it depends if the cushions are fibre filled or foam to an extent but tbh i would wait a few weeks for it to wear in. alternatively i could send my hubby round he is very good at workin an @ssgroove into a chair

Thank you all for your replies! Mum seems to have accepted she'll have to wait and hopefully will end up with a comfortable sofa!.

As its not going to be used very much (mum will continue to use the main living room) we have a standing joke that everyone in the house must sit on the new sofa's for at least 10 mins a day to help the softening process! Thanks for offering to send round your hubby smallpackages but I've got 2 huge son's and they are under strict instructions to lounge as much as they like! :rotfl:

Fingers crossed all will be soft and cosy in a few weeks! :)
