Can employer stop me from taking a second job?

Now that Christmas is over and the VAT has increased, where I work is becoming increasingly quiet and therefore we are restricted to our contact hours.

My contract hours is 20 and before xmas I was getting double that but if the hours are going to stay like this indefinately I need a second job to meet my financial commitments. I started originally as an xmas temp whilst working another job but they were so pleased with my work they asked me to give up my other job to work here, If I didn't they said they'd have to let me go, it would work out as more money so I accepted the offer and packed my other job in.

When I signed my contract I expressed my concerns about the lack of contract hours as I was after a full time job, she told me not to worry as there would always be over time for me and I'd get first priority.

The reason I'm concerned about taking a second job is because a few of my colleagues got second jobs but my manager was not happy about it and made them choose between jobs, but seeing the current circumstances with hours I fell I have no choice. I wouldn't like to leave for another job if possible as I love my job and get on with everyone there. I would like to work this job weekdays and a different job weekends but I'm concerned I'm at risk of losing my job if I try to do this.

Can my Manager force me not to have a second job? She can't really sack me for it surely as I've done nothing wrong and I'm still able to meet my contract hours, any advice would be really helpful.

Thanks!
I try to help as much as I can. But I'm also honest and speak my mind.

what does it say in your contract about second employment? would it be a job with conflicting interests. i dont think legally they can stop you - write to head office for clarification if your manager is being a bit off with others

  • Doesn't say anything about not being able to take a second job, just can't share information about the company with a rival.

  • Refer to the company handbook as well. Probably the easiest way would be to ask for your employer's views on taking on a second job first. Some employers don't allow this, but in my experience, those that don't will make it perfectly clear in your contract, so if there is nothing on yours it maybe suggests that they won't be worried about it.
