Fancy Dress 1970 theme?

G'day all,

I have been invited to a fancy dress birthday party in 2 weeks time. The theme is 1970 (the year the birthday girl was born).

I am
a) not from the UK, so don't know what was popular in 1970 here
b) a lot younger than the birthday girl... in fact, my mum was only in primary school in 1970!!
c) not very fashionable and pretty clueless about clothes and makeup
d) about 50lb lighter now than I was this time last year... and so I would *love* to flaunt my fab new skinny self at this party and show off my new bod that I have worked very hard on this year! About a size 12 now I think?

Anyway, I have absolutely NO idea what to wear to this party or who to dress up as. I have done some Googling and Wikipedia-ing and cannot find any ideas.

Can anyone please give me some inspiration? Pretty please? I am totally stumped!!

Thanks :)

Quite tricky if you want to be specifically 1970.

Abba etc is a little later in the decade.

I would say hot pants, big craze then, if you want to flaunt your new bod!

Lulu is around today and was then, wearing tight little hotpants with tights underneath (American tan usually!!) and knee high boots, fairly easy to improvise. The bib type hotpants were very popular too.

Best I can think of (and I was there too :( )

Sorry I was just thinking of the 70s instead of the specific year!

Oh gawd, so sorry peeps, I never got an email updates for this thread so I didn't know you'd all been replying, I thought I only had the one answer! Sorry about that, didn't mean to be an ignorant so-and-so :(

Thanks so much for the ideas, and the links. I had bought a skirt off ebay that I thought would work, but it arrived last night and it really doesn't look right, so it's back to the drawing board for me :( I am off to a "recycled clothing" store after work tonight so I've got some good ideas here from all the links and I'll keep them all in mind while I'm trawling the vintage section of the store!

Don't know that I am quite brave enough for hotpants, but if I find some in the vintage store I'll try them on and see how bad I look LOL :)

I think I will look for flares, or a dress and boots, and anything in bright colours with swirls or paisley, and see what I can find.

    Thanks again all!
