Does anyone know anything about good BMX bikes ?

It is my sons birthday in a few weeks. He really wants a BMX.I know nothing about what to look for in a good one.According to someone in a bike shop BMX's are a standard size, and one bought now should be suitable for years to come( to adulthood). So we would like to get a good one with good parts etc, which he will love and cherish for years to come, rather than just a toy one, which if he gets good on,he'll want to replace with a better one in a year or two.(he's only going to be 8,but is mature in his taste and thinking).
Do any of you lot have any BMX knowledge? What makes(or parts or features) to avoid or look out for ?Preferably cheap(but not rubbish!).I dont just want to end up choosing by colour!
I spotted this on Ebay, item number 220044453382 not sure if it's just sleek looking promotional stuff, not much good to actually ride(no idea who the promoter is)or a good buy,if anyone who actually rides knows I'd appreciate your thoughts, thanks.

any advice anyone?Sorry I know it's cheeky to bump it,but I posted it in the middle of the night, and I guess anyone with info, wouldn't of read it yet.
  • why dont you take the advice of the local bike shop? i saw one few weeks ago for £69 have a shop around in halfords etc you may get a discount code to knock the price down .that particular bike on ebay seems ok for someone who specifically wants it for the design. not that im an expert mind you ! hope that helps

  • Stick with the big names...Haro, Mongoose, GT, Diamond Back.

Look for light cro-moly frames and quality components i.e Dia Compe, Shimano etc.

Realistically, your entry level will be 150 quid but 200 quid will get your son a nice bike.
  • You should also consider what he wants to use the bike for. Racing bikes are light alloy frames, alloy rims, single piece cranks etc. Freestyle (tricks) bikes are heavier and built to handle greater forces.
