Camcorder recomendation required

I'm looking to buy a camcorder....havent a clue what constitutes a good one from a not so good one 
If anyone can recommend something that'd be great. I got about £500 burning a hole in my pocket....maybe a tad more.
I was thinking of buying one from singapore airport when we stop over there.
Has anyone else done the same ??
