insulating tape for single-glazed windows

i live in a rented ground floor victorian conversion. we have a huge bay window in our bedroom - great in the summer but is making the room very cold now the temperature has dropped. It has single-glazing.

There's a bit of a draught coming from where the window opens. I was wondering if putting some kind of tape along the edges would help (reduce heat loss, reduce my gas bill, reduce energy waste...).
If so what kind of tape is best?

Also, there's a big gap underneath my front door (opens into a common corridor). At the moment I'm using a rolled up towel tied with rubber bands to prevent a draught.
Any other (better) suggestions?

thanks

Hi Mr. Rush...On my spare bedroom windows, I have bubble wrap stretched over, held in place with double sided transparent carpet tape.
The tape goes onto the wooden frame, and you may have to fiddle with a few fixtures, but the whole looks good from the outside. Can't open windows tho.
Two 20mm or larger pipe wraps, one on each side of the door, held together with strong cloth makes a good door draught excluder.

I remember seeing some stuff, a couple of years ago now, for windows.

It was like cling film, you stretched it of the frame and used a hair drier to heat it up, it then shrunk to form a ridgid film which acted like a second pane of glass.

Probably not as good, but cheaper.

You can get "brushes" to screw to the bottom of the door.

I have window that opens by tilting and there was a hell of a draught through it. I got some tape from B&Q at the weekend, it's like foamy polstyrene, it was £5 for the box but BOGOF at the moment. It just fitted round the edge (had to do a double width at one point 'cos the gap was so big). Dead easy to do and no draught now.

You can also get those strips that look like a brush to go along the bottom of the door to stop draughts there.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

I used to live in the mountains, surrounded by ice.

I just sewed 4 layers of material on my curtain, the insulation was incredible. The window would be icey on the insude, but my room was warm and nice.

I bought some glazing film from Wilkinsons last week. £9.99 for 12 sq metres. All you need is a pair of scissors, a hairdryer and a lot of patience. The 2 north facing windows I have done now have much less condensation and the rooms feel warmer. The only disadvantage is that the tape will remove some paint when I take it down. The product is called Window Seal Instant Double Glazing and is marketed by Oracstar in Northampton.

Also in Wilkinsons are draught excluders for £1. I've bought a few and covered them in better quality material - sample curtain bought in a sale for 50p.

I hope you have a Wilkinsons near you!
