Wrong tax code payment

Hi i hope someone can help me,
I have received a letter from the taxman saying that i owe
£1080 for the last 3 years as when i had 2 jobs both employees
had given me the same tax code, does anyone know if i have to pay this amount??? i spoke to the tax people and they said i would have to pay an extra 85 a month onto of the tax that i already pay,
i really cannot afford this and dont underdstand y i have to
as it is not my mistake,
Any help would be greatful thanks x

    What paperwork did you give to the second employer when starting ? If an incorrectly completed P46 then you could be held liable. Under our tax laws you are responsible for ensuring you pay the correct amount of tax. If it was found that the employer was ignoring tax office instructions then they could be held liable but more than likely it is a fair cop guv !!
