  • Royal Mail backlogged some mail when companies posted a lot more then they forecasted and this was kept backlogged and gradually filtered into the system, everything sent afterwards was processed as normal.

one of the reasons was the bad weather, another reason was companies underforcasting their volumes, another reason was our so called competitors shut their doors and handed everything back to RM.

I will give you an example of a company underforcasting. a well know internet entertainment provider usuallys has 40 articulated lorries into their site a day. On monday 6th dec, is classed as black monday for xmas post and this company forcasted an extra 100 articulated vehicles for the monday on friday night. Totalling 140 artics.

Royal mail actual sent to them 291 articulated vehicles and still dod not clear all the work from their warehouse. The reason it snowd the week before and everyone went online shopping.

Royal Mail when faced with this and knew worse was to come, did not like its competitors and certain supermarket chains shut its doors and suspended all deliveries, instead they phoned every hire company in the country and took on all their spare vehicles, increased the use of agencies and got the managers helping clear the backlog.

They pumped an extra £20million into clearing the backlog and a lot of managers myself included were working 90 hour weeks to ensure most of the mail was received in time for xmas.

If we had been a private company they would have shut their doors and told the companies to find other arrangements if they hadn't have forecasted properly.

Appreciate the explanation, but if they cannot cope with the demand then its all been in vain, as surely they will have hundreds if not thousands of claims going in for these lost items.

I wish they wouldn't leave packages at the front of my house neither, anyone can walk past and lift it and probably has done.
