Hard times in the building trade...

  • Being in the building trade you would have thought I would have been in disagreement with some of the above comments but I fully understand where people are coming from.

We sub out most of out work and find it increasingly difficult to get tradesmen / suppliers etc to respond.

If we have to have a tender in for a certain time on a certain day it has to be submitted or simply we don't have a chance of getting the work. For a tradesman to phone a week after a tender has been submitted and ask how we got on and have we any other work for them to price........even though he didn't submit his price on time or in the correct format if find is a complete joke!!

On behalf of builders, we where closed for 2 weeks as we have set holidays set by the federation of builders. The last thing any of our boys want is to get a phone call when they are on holiday asking them to come into work!! Even though on christmas eve we had to help a client out with a leak on his roof!!

Can I disagree please? I'm wondering where all these great opportunities are - certainly not in my neck of the woods! My hubby is a bricklayer with license for telescope and is good all round generally (plastering, diy etc) with 30+ years experience. For the first time ever in his working life he has no work and no prospect of any! He got business cards printed and has them distributed all over the place in shops etc (can't afford newspaper ads) and is currently receiving NO income at all since he's self employed and I work full time he has been told not entitled to benefits so not even signing on and still paying his NI by direct debt out of his fast dwindling savings!! If anyone needs anything done please pm me and I'll pass it on with much gratitude!!
Life's a box of beads - rainbow coloured and full of surprises!:D
