Underactive Thyroid changed to Overactive

Anyone else had this? I was diagnosed with Underactive Thyroid after my 2nd DD was born in 2009. It was very Underactive but after being on tablets for 1 year was on the correct dose. I did not have the weight gain people experience but I was unable to shift much baby weight. I practically stayed at the same weight. That was until october when I noticed i'd lost 1/2 stone without trying. Since then I am now up to 2 stones weight loss. I had a blood test last week and saw the dr this week. I now have an Overactive thyroid. Horrah! Weight loss!! Anyway, dr said it wasn't highly over so, seeing as my only symptom at the mo is weight loss he'll keep my dose of Thyroxine the same. He thinks if we lower it i'll be back with an Underactive one within 6 weeks. If I develop more symptoms I will go back. I am on 175mcg of Thyroxine.

This happened to anyone? Did you get more symptoms of Overactive in time of just stick with weight loss? I'm over the moon! - Although I suppose I could just as easily go Under again.

I would be going back to see another doctor in the practice for a second opinion. Our GPs would have a fit if any of their patients wanted to stay on their present dose when the blood tests were showing overactivity! They are always going on about how serious the effects can be of taking a higher than needed dose of thyroxine.

There are also other reasons for unexplained weight loss. Did he do tests to eliminate those?
  • As I said it's not greatly over the threshold. I didn't get figures off him this time for exact numbers. Like I said I have no other symptons. I had full blood tests done. You could see a number of doctors for the same complaint and get several different opinions. At the moment I am happy with what he has said. He obviously checked all the results to come to his conclusion. If I were taking an amount far greater than needed i'm sure i'd be having palpitations, sweats, anxiety or any other worrying symptom.

Thank you for your comment but really I just wonderred if anyone else had theirs change either way.

    Hi,
This is my first post so pls be gentle!

I'm currently going through the same thing & same dosage as well 175mcg daily.
Saw the Doc back in November for a re-test & was told I was borderline overactive. I haven't had any signs of being overactive, still feel cold & tired constantly :-( & def no weight loss (lucky you!).

One of the downfalls of over treatment is bone thinning in later life apparently so my doc is quite keen to sort me out asap. Might end up me taking 175mcg one day then 150mcg the next (what a pain!) been for my blood test today so should find next week what's going on.
Mine was also diagnosed after DD1 was born (thought it was pnd!) that was 4 yrs ago now.

Would like to know how you get on.

Hth in some way. Always nice to know ppl in the same boat :-)

  • Hi Jo

Isn't it a pain! I suppose he could've suggested alternating doses on different days. I may ask next time i'm in. I was also diagnosed with pnd and put on pick me up pills for 6 months. I had high bp late in pregnancy, which continued for months after. Finally the nurse said she'd take blood test to see if the answer lay there. That's when the thyroid was picked up on. Silly really as my mum is under, nan was over and great aunts on both sides have problems. It was bound to catch up with me at some point. If i'm pretty much boarder line, it's a tricky thing to decide what to do. The though of having to start messing with my dose again does not fill me with much joy, so as I said, until anything else stops working as it should i'm happy to plod along like this. Nice to 'speak' with you and have someone in the same boat as me. x

  • My mum was on 150mcg, and went to dr's to have herself checked andthey reduced her dose. She returned saying how bad she felt and was told that 'that can happen' and the rd wouldn't do anything to help her. Being underactive and not having t he problem sorted is awful. When my thyroid first went wrong it was a nightmare. I was so tired and so depressed, really not fair on the kids. I was tested a few times over the years for thyroid but it never came up as being a problem, I guess pregnancy can trigger it off.

  • I'm sure mine was to do with being borderline gestational diabetic as well as when I was expecting DD2 while taking thyroxine my diabetes didn't return as it usually doese with subsequent pregnancies.
My Dr did off me pick me up pills but I knew I wasn't depressed, just very very miserable @ exhausted (put that down to being a new mum etc)
My mum recently had a suspected overactive thyroid but is still awaiting test results (her docs are rubbish, should convince her to switch really) as she lost loads of weight quite quickly without explanation. Apart from that I'm the only one in my family that we know of who has a thyroid problem. Was diagnosed at 21, which kind of makes it feel worse to me being so young (no offence intended!!) as it is more common in slightly older women.

It is horrible not knowing what's making you feel so rotten constantly, then finding out it's all to do with a gland the size of a grain of rice! Stoopid thyroids.

Don't want to have to alternatate my dosage, 3 tabs a day is bad enough, trying to remember which day is which dose :-/
I was borderline enough for my doc to say no worried we'll retest in 3 months. So hopefully it was just a glitch & he'll leave me alone!
  • Hope he does! It's a pain when I accidentally drop 2 tablets into the same bit in my pill box ans I can't remember what one is what! No offence with age comment, i'm only 31 and was 29 when diagnosed. My mum was in her 30's when hers popped up. She thinks she went undiagnosed for about 10 years. She'd felt a bit rubbish, mood swings etc (but my dad was cheated on her a lot so she would feel rubbish), was only when she collapsed whilst at shops, and someone called ambulance that tests were done. Imagine feeling so tired, down and just plain rough for 10 years! Awful.

  • How awful for her! I thought 6 months was rotten, can't imagine feeling that way for 10 years! My doc did say when I was diagnosed that the only time they test for thyroid specifically is just after birth, unless you've got obvious syptoms.
