Stayed there twice, the most recent time being 2008. It's handy to everything without being in yer face.0

I stopped following trip advisor because I think it's hard to please everyone and some where just using it as an excuse to moan about anything. Try booking direct with the hotel https://www.hotelmetronyc.com0

We stayed at the Novotel the first time we went (2007), on the corner of 52nd and Broadway. Had a view onto Broadway and although it might not have been the cheapest, it was a great location for our first time in the city and we could be reasonably sure what we were going to get.
We also stayed in the Time hotel in 2008 http://www.thetimeny.com/ which is on W.49th street (again right in the heart of the action). Again this was really well located - though right opposite a theatre so it could be a bit of a 'salmon swimming upstream' situation if we wanted to get back to the hotel as a show ended.
I would happily stay at either again.
Have breakfast at Ellen's Stardust diner on the corner of Broadway / W.51st Street - it's not the cheapest diner but all the waiting staff are actors/singers who put on 'shows' while you eat - a great upbeat way to start the day http://www.ellensstardustdiner.com/Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16
