Hysterectomy, what would be useful?

  • One of my older friends was hospitalised for a major abdominal op (not hysterectomy) - I made her a large lavender 'pillow' to help her sleep (our own dried lavender). Plus some bottles of diluted essential oils she could dab on her wrists.

Hospital beds are horribly uncomfortable - if there's anything you could pop underneath her to help her feel more like a human being (those nasty plastic mattress covers they use are sweaty and noisy).

My husband was majorly ill four years ago and spent almost two weeks nil by mouth on morphine - when he was allowed a little fluids by mouth, he enjoyed some 'Yakult' type stuff. Also, hospital food truly is dreadful - your friend will really appreciate some yummy little homemade tasties to tempt her.

there may be restrictions on food which can be taken into hospital: our hospital has a leaflet and unwrapped sweets and loose biscuits are discouraged because I think they can spread infection.

We took small amounts of fresh chopped fruits and vegetable crudites in little tupperware bowls - just enough to nibble in a visiting session. When husband ordered 'a cheese salad' on the day before he was discharged, he received three small limp lettuce leaves and a teaspoon of grated 'something yellow' and tasteless. Not very tempting!
