Yes, my husband has been to Smithfield (he is a chef) and he assures me it is open to the general public. You can buy small pieces of meat there (you don't have to buy a whole pig or half a cow - although you can if you want to...), just like at any "normal" butcher's shop, and I am told that there are other meat-related stalls there (for example, one that sells stuffings, etc). However, his advice is to go early (and wrap up warm!) because the market is in full swing by 5-6am - certainly get there before 8am.
Also, probably sounds obvious but don't go if you don't like to see meat being prepared, because although there are stalls there with meat all prepared, you will almost certainly see whole animals being butchered at some point while you are walking round...!

Try Crosbie's in Charterhouse Street. It's a catering butcher which sells to the general public and it's open at lunch time. You'll recognise it because it has a red shop front. I've been going there for years. Some of their best bargains - a pack of boneless chicken breasts for £18 which contains about 25 fillets (good size ones too). Good for mince and stewing steak and you can get a whole leg of lamb for about £15. If that's too big they'll saw it in half for you and you can freeze half. Pork fillet also very cheap. The only thing you have to watch is their beef roasting joints - often they'll be silverside which is a bit tough. If you ask for topside you'll get decent stuff.
Friday lunchtime is a bit of a scrum but they are very quick to serve you. The other butchers that are open at lunchtime tend to be a bit pricy or else they are selling catering packs. Crosbies has proper butchers who know what they are talking aboutIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Would also recommend Crosbies. They have a really good selection - great packs of sausages for bbq time, and my favourite is fillet steak. Pick a whole fillet and they will slice it into whatever size you want.0

they want to demolish smithfield market .....
while i have never been there but its such an iconic place, everyone has heard of it..of how we used to shop.... if something like this is under thread..... there is def.. no hope for the smaller village/town markets....which have been going for umpteen years...i am sure that carmarthen undercover market that has been there for years is being moved so there can be a new inner town development.... so the 'big chains' shops have more space etc...
are they trying to get rid od nystalga..sp? and our good old os ways..
they prob want to demolish it so they can put some new modern mulit million money making building.....
sorry if this is the wrong board to put it on..... but as i felt this was food related.. and an os way of shopping....Work to live= not live to work0
