Membership Increase at L.A. Fitness

Hi,
I became a member of L.A. Fitness 5 years ago. My membership at that time, I think, was 28£ for a central London club. Over the years, there were constant increases, with 2010 due to a rather half-hearted 'refurbishment' of the club seeing a sudden increase of 10£. For the new year, yet another increase turned my membership into a 50£ one!
This means, within 5 years my membership nearly doubled, and I am starting to get doubts in the legitimacy of so much change from original contractual conditions. Does anyone have any comments or advise whether this is acceptable or not, and what I should try? Many thanks.

I was at a London LA fitness club last year (or technically the year before last, ended contract in Jan 2010). I was originally given a contract of £49 a month.
It got to Christmas and I found out almost by accident my fees were going to go up to £70 a month!
I left and went to a better gym for what worked out at a lower price- not a fan of LA Fitness as its so dark inside so many of their clubs and the showers have mould. I don't ever want to be paying £70 a month to catch illnesses as I wash! Though having said that, not as dire as Fitness First where I caught several skin conditions at the exact same time as a two week trial there.
As for value, I'd think about what is important to you as a member, if you feel its worth it. Its your money, its your time and your body. I'd suggest stopping the contract and taking a month or so to try other gyms out on text days/weeks and seeing if there are any you prefer and can live with. This is what I did, technically a month of gym useage for free! It does take some forward planning but is a definate money saver.0 -
Standard clauses and exclusions:
7.2 "We may increase the charges at any time"
9.3 "You may terminate the contract on one months notice if we increase our charges more than once in any 12 month period, or by more than 10% at any one time"the club seeing a sudden increase of 10£.
They are in breech of their own terms and conditions, and you well within your right to leave with one months notice.
Hope this helps,0 -

Call their head office on 0844 770 7700 and ask what they can do - I did. I committed for another 12 months to work of the Xmas pounds and got a reduction.0
