Applying for a Mortgage

My wife and I are looking at applying for a mortgage. I was silly with my money a while ago and have two defaults (one is five and half years old and the other is four and a half, both are paid. My wife and I have no debts, earn a joint salary of £70K ish (secure jobs) and have at least 10% deposit. We bank with HSBC and asked about a mortgage and they said they could not give us a mortgage in principle.

I suppose the questions I am asking should I shop around for a mortgage? Should I wait until the defaults are over six years old so they are no longer on my credit file? Should I take in my credit file to the bank.

I suppose I do not want to keep applying for a mortgage and keep getting rejected.

Any help/advice would be great.

  • Good luck, I am in the same boat...
  • are some people who are mortgage advisers and could give some opinions. i'd say ask a mortgage adviser who accesses the whole market to see if you could get a deal. Sounds like you have a decent salary, but only 10% deposit isn't all that much in the big scheme of things.
