I boil (simmer not boil) mince, won't have it any other way. I am 51 and have always 'boiled' it, as did my mother and grandmother.

well techinically i boil/simmer mine. when i fry it of and i've made the sauce it will bubble away.

sorry for confusion, but i'm talking about peeps who boil water, tip the mince in and then drain it, when cooked.

You can also pad out mince with red lentils.

As with someone above, tried it once, never again  I
prefer small amounts of lean mince, the other i would
    give to our dogs.
  • Personally I have no complaints with Sainsbury's Basic mince. I always use it for Bolognese - I leave a big batch cooking slowly overnight in my slow cooker, skimming off any excess fat in the morning - then freeze in individual portions. I can't speak for any other value/basic mince as I have only ever tried Sainsbury's and have never found any pieces of fat or gristle in it.

I use the cheap mince and add cheap soya mince to bulk it out.

I hate cheap meat of any description. I find it too fatty or been injected with water. Things like sausages have little meat. I always do Quality over quantity every time.

In the dim and distant past I worked in the butchery section of a now vanished supermarket, and one of my jobs was to feed the body parts into the mincer.

I will refrain from giving you a horror story list of what went in (it would make you heave) and just say that if you buy mince go for some with a tag like super lean or premium, NEVER under any circumstances put cheap mince into your body!!

I use meat as the Japanese do, as a garnish rather than the main part of the meal.

I made the mistake of buying the recent Lidl deal for the 99p mince and made meatballs (I think someone told me that it's better to use a fattier mince so they stick together) - well it was grim. I ate it but I will never buy non lean mince again. If I did I would fry pour the fat off a lot.

  • If you are using it in a sauce ie spag bol or chilli there is nothing wrong with the cheap mince just make sure you drain all the fat off. Yeah okay it may not taste as great as the more expensive leaner meat but it is a hell of a lot cheaper.
