tax refund whilst on maternity allowance

Options
hi, i am hoping that this is the correct board to post on.
just a question i have really and wondering if anyone can help with an answer, i have always worked but recently changed jobs and then found out that i was pregnant so this has now resulted in me having to claim maternity allowance as i wasn't in the job long enough for them to pay me, because i have only worked for half of the year i only earned just over 5,000 but i paid tax every week.
in total i have paid about £300 in tax this tax year so far but i wont be back to work until august, because mat allowance is not taxable i wont be paying tax for the rest of the year so is it possible to claim this tax back or will i have to wait until after april?
any help appreciated
thanks

  • Hello, yes if you complete a P50 (see below) and send it to your local tax office - maybe ask your employer for this if you don't know. A rebate should then follow.

If you are on maternity leave and still on your employer's books they will not have issued a P45. If this is the case then you will not be able to use a P50. Most employers would under these circumstances be paying a tax rebate when your normal wages would have been due, provided that your tax code is on a cumulative basis, as you started recently it is possible that your code is on a week 1/ month 1 basis.
  • hi as i was not to receive maternity from work it was also a seasonal job, they gave me a p45 when i left so i will try that form, although just looked at it and didn't mention maternity allowance, my baby is due in 10 days and i am due back to work in July, i can go back to same job but just thought i would be able to get this tax back as i know i definitely wont be working again in this tax year, thank you for all the help
    xx

As you are now off their books and a P45 issued; yes you can use the P50 and mark it that you will not be working again this year so can get all your tax back.
