Holding my hand up here ! Buying from car boots as well, but it's a bit tricky because you can't always try the clothes on/check the size.

It works for me as long as I don't need something specific. Usually, it's a quick walk into the shop, flick through the rails and see if there is something that would appeal and fit. If not, I walk out and try again later.

The beauty of buying second-hand is that you can experiment to some extent and if you made a wrong decision, at least you can take comfort that the charity will make use of your money

Same here - I don’t mind if I don't wear/use a charity sop purchase as the money's gone to a good casue. I usually just donate it to the same shop again - the SA noticed once, it gave us a good laugh!

I buy loads from charity shops and eBay, I love getting a bargain and almost never pay full price for anything. High street stuff is always bought in the sales, I would make an exception for something really incredible and pay full price if I thought it would sell out or I'm abroad and won't visit the shop again.

p.s. hello to goanmad and glowgirl!!!! :)

    Skirt - Primark - 1 euro

    Buys this weekend:
New Look grey trousers for work £1.50 (label still on yippee!)
    Primark v neck jumper (£2.50)
Warehouse black cheesecloth style shirt (£3.50)
M&S grey trousers for work £3

I really need to stop this addiction!!

Look out for shoes if you don't mind second hand shoes! Some will have been hardly worn, and I have noticed that our local Heart Foundation shop re-heels them before putting them out on the shelf!!! They aren't a lot more expensive either.

It is worth asking for the returns policy - when trying on in the Lighthouse shop I noticed a sign (not displayed anywhere else) that if you leave the charity shop label attached and keep your till receipt, they will refund in full if not suitable!!

I sorted out my wardrobe yesterday and it's getting a really squeeze to fit stuff in and I still have more things to hang up. It's pretty bad considering I have a triple wardrobe and I'm using space saving hangers which hook on to each other so I can hang 4-5 items instead of 1!

Anyway, I thought to myself that I have waaaaaaaay to many clothes and shouldn't buy any more for a year - I don't even find the thought scary! The only thing that put me off was I love Wheels & Dollbaby clothes, they are expensive and very few stockists nothing locally and only decent online stockist in uk is asos so I always keep an eye out for them on ebay and like to snap them on when I see them at an ok price and I didn't like the thought of not being able to do that anymore but this challenge is perfect as I can still check out ebay and means if I need something for an occasion I should be able to get something but I wont be buying much or wasting a fortune on the high street.

I probably wont have much to contribute very often as I intend on buying very little clothes this year, I don't tend to go into charity shops so no risk of me impulse shopping as I only search for things on ebay I want/need :)

PS - I expect to sell more clothes then I buy this year - I am listing so many on ebay at the moment!
  • hi all.

I am in the process of clearing out my wardrobe, selling them in order to endeavour to only buy second hand in 2011. I'll not include shoes or underwear but the rest will be pre worn. I'm hoping to still treat myself, look good but only spend a fraction of the cost.

look forward to sharing with you in 2011 :)

  • Most of my clothes are second hand, originally it was more from necessity rather than choice as I gave up work to bring up my two children, but even now I am back at work I can't bear to pay high street store prices and would far rather hunt for a bargain in charity shops or jumble sales (of which, sadly, there are all too few around my area).

Good luck - you can get some fantastic second hand clothes in charity shops!

Well Id love to have said Ive only bought second hand clothes this year but alas Ive already jumped into the sales and bought 3 new tops - although they were ridiculously reduced - £8 each from about £30 each.

I have already bought my first Second Hand item from ebay though - a big woollen cardigan from Dorothy Perkins cost me a whole £1.87 Bargain!

Have got my eye on a few more tops on ebay though, trying to keep everything below £6 including postage. I do see my tops as an essential though Im one of these people that live in leggings so long tops / dresses are essentially my outfit. I do need to replace all my clothes from last year and I think second hand is probably the way to go - most of my clothes from last year are all Primark as I had no money but the majority have fallen apart/worn out or generally look terrible now - most of them are probably too naff to even donate to charity....

    Hi All,
As a person who spends a lot of my salary on Clothes I have decided I am going to try and only buy Second Hand Clothes in 2011. This does not include underwear and shoes. I have been buying a lot of good quality 2nd hand clothes in latter half of 2010 and there is some nice clothes available if you are prepared to root through clothes in 2nd hand shops.

Is there anyone else that buys from 2nd hand clothes shop.

I have bought some beautiful clothes from 2nd hand shops with labels such as French Connection, River Island, Top Shop, M&S Per Una, NEXT etc...
    Yes certainly.
We live on an island with limited new clothes choice (only recently got a small clothes section in our new Tesco!) so it is online, catalogues, the mainland, or local charity shops for us.
Over the years I have found many clothes in almost new or brand new with tags, order, when I needed work clothes/smart clothes and also now more casual things. I also get things for DS.
Today I got a brand new pair of leggings (with tags) which I will wear under my jeans - it is cold up here, and a lovely sort of metallic knitted jumper - nicer than it sounds lol!
I have also got new shoes (would really only buy new or almost new shoes) but like you, underwear will be new (well my mum often gifts it to me!).
Does your challenge include e-bay too ?
Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.
Encouragement always works better than judgement.

  • I haven't bought a stitch of new clothing bar underwear since 2009. Before then it was work-clothes through choice but of late it's been out of necessity.
Luckily, there's not much at all that I really need now but I do have a few charity-shops on my "always visit when I'm in the area" list as they're in far posher neighbourhoods than where I live so some real bargains can sometimes be found.
My rule is to only ever buy items of a better quality than I could afford new (these days that's not saying much). I have a heavenly selection of good silk shirts and cashmere jackets.
My most recent purchase was a pair of gorgeous grey wool MaxMara trousers for £8 which would have cost an absolute fortune new. At Christmas when staying with my sister in much posher Berkshire I snatched up a pair of DKNY shoes for a fiver. It might be a bit sad but it gives me so much pleasure to be able to have lovely things which I couldn't ordinarily afford even though they're not new.
