Get Koi eating out of my hand

Options
When I feed my Koi they circle the food just below the water and wait for me to walk away. Once I am out of view they will come up to the surface to feed.

Can anybody advise how to get them to feed from my hand and trust me.

Thanks ???

  • Hi Jackie,
This shouldn't be too difficult. I'm sure you have the men eating out of your hand. It can't be that different with fish. ;D Lol

Don't know the ins and the outs - but will tell you what I do know.

Basically, like Pavlov and his dogs it will take a bit of time.

I wanted to do the same thing and started doing well.

Just before I fed them I started moving my fingers about in the surface of the water so they would associate this with being fed. Then feed and leave them to it.

After a while of doing this when I moved my fingers in the water it became a trigger for the fish that it was feeding time. They eventually would come and investigate my fingers, until gradually they sucked my fingers on the odd occasion. Hadn't quite got to putting it in their mouth when my son was born and taken to Great Ormond St hospital for 13 weeks and when I came back it all went out of the window and am back to square one again. Dont know if tht is helpful just my own experience.
if i had known then what i know now

I do not know much about koi but i know about goldfish...they loved food so much...I guess if they are very afraid they will not come near you...so take your time...

By the way I was wondering Does anyone know is there is a goldfish pond in London...I have 4 big and fat goldfish and they are starting to be too big for my tank...I am sure they need space...I was looking for a nice pond for them...I am living in London South near Streatham...Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated....thanks.... ;D
No reliance should be placed on the above.
  • What some koi keepers do is buy a chagoi koi as they are very friendly and will soon eat out of your hand which will encourage the others to do the same.
