Exploding Hob Cover

Would be grateful if anyone could advise.
I bought a glass hob cover, which can withstand heat up to 200c, and which covers two hob plates.
Today I switched on the wrong hob plate by accident - I switched on one which was under the hob cover and it was on for about 5 mins. As soon as I noticed I switched it off but 30 seconds later the hob cover exploded - glass *everywhere* and if Id been standing any closer to it I could have been seriously injured. The glass even exploded out of the kitchen door and onto the other end of my living room.
Now this is 100% my fault - but my concern is the severity of what happened, given that turning the wrong hob plate on is a mistake most of us have made at one point or another. Should a piece of furniture designed to be kept over a hob not go through better safety checks?
Would appreciate people's opinions.

That is awful! If it were me I would take photos of the glass everywhere and then contact whoever you brought it from and take it from there. I'm not sure who you would need to go to if the supplier does not help, but that definitely seems to be a manufacturing fault, and certainly a health and safety issue.
Sorry I couldn't be more help0 -
Did it come with any paper work or warning stickers? We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0

Did it come with any paper work or warning stickers?
It didnt. The 200c thing came from the item description on the website.
The only reason I want to pursue it is because I was so shaken by it - and by the thought that someone could have been badly injured.
PS Forgot to say sorry if I posted in the wrong place0 -

You don't state whether the hob is gas or electric radiant (or some other) but do you have any idea how hot a gas flame is or the temperature you've subjected this cover to?
A gas flame would be almost TEN TIMES the 200°C maximum temperature that this cover is rated to.
I'm sure that it has been tested and safety checked to a significant tolerance ABOVE its recommended maximum - probably by 50% to 100% - so 300°C to 400°C.
I'm not surprised that it exploded if you got it somewhere near TWO THOUSAND DEGREES
If this cover had been made out of wood and, having done what you've done, it had caught fire would you still be concerned about what safety checks it had been subjected to ?
Personally I don't think you should have left it in place EVEN if you were intending to use an adjacent cooking position - should not be on the hob at all if you plan on turning it on.
EDIT UPDATE
I've just Googled GLASS HOB COVER which found exactly what you appear to be describing at ARGOS
It specifically says
Heat resistant up to 200°C
Not for use on lit or hot hobs
