Recovering scratched placemat

Options
Has anyone got any idea how I could cover a set of placemats that are looking sadly scratched. The pattern appears to be paper. Whilst I could replace them, I like the fact that they are quite large.
What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?

I am so glad you asked this, I have some cheapy ones I bought last year which weren't laminated, and look terrible. They don't really match the kitchen decor anyway, and I had thought about covering them with leftover wallpaper but wasn't sure how to go about it, I had been thinking using border adhesive to stick the paper on and varnishing over them but wanted to ask if anyone else had done it, so I will await the responses too. :)

You could use fabric to cover them pillowcase style so you can remove them to wash :)

Or hem a strip of fabric on both long ends then secure to placemat with velcro (on the back)
  • You could trim material to fit and use a glue gun? What about fake leather ?
  • My mam covered hers with some sticky backed plastic and they looked great.

How about decoupage? Cut out pictures from magazines etc. and stick them over the mat. You could use whatever you like the look of - flowers/food/animals etc. I would then cover them with a coat (or2) of clear varnish.
